Who Is AuronPlay? From a Masked YouTuber to Twitch

· The Streamer

AuronPlay is one of the best-known names in Spanish-speaking YouTube and Twitch, famous for a straight face, quick jokes and a chat that never sleeps. Here's a short guide to the person behind the merch, for new fans and old ones.

Who is AuronPlay?

AuronPlay is the online name of Raúl Álvarez Genes, a YouTuber and streamer born in 1988 in Badalona, near Barcelona. Fans also simply call him Auron.

Where does the name come from?

From a video game: Auron is a character in Final Fantasy X.

How did he start?

He created his YouTube channel in 2006, and in his early videos he hid his face behind a mask. From 2012 he made the videos that defined his style: short, sharp criticism of whatever the internet was talking about, with simple editing and no script.

When did he move to Twitch?

He opened his Twitch channel in September 2019. Since then his streams have mixed chatting, reacting and gaming with big group events, such as:

  • Tortillaland: a Minecraft roleplay series he organised and starred in.
  • Squid Game: a Twitch Rivals event in January 2022, run with fellow streamers Komanche and Rubius.

Has he done anything off screen?

Yes, he has written three books: De lo peor, lo mejor: los consejos de Auron (2015), AuronPlay, el libro (2016) and El juego del hater (2016). In 2021 he was named Streamer of the Year at the MTV Millennial Awards.

Why do fans wear his merch?

AuronPlay's community runs on catchphrases and memes, from ¡Tengo miedo! ("I'm scared!") to zumito. Wearing one is the easiest way to spot another fan in the room.
